MANILA, Philippines – The children’s classic Alice in Wonderland is set to song in a rousing musical that’s been performing to sold out audiences since August.

Its run ends this Saturday.

G Töngi reports.

I’m here at Onstage Greenbelt, home of the Repertory Philippines Theater company. We go backstage to check out the action as the characters prepare for the musical, Alice in Wonderland.

A whimsical and timeless story written by Lewis Caroll, Alice in Wonderland captivated children around the world for over 150 years! Directed by Joy Virata, it has all the elements of a spectacle of a musical.

Actress Liesel Batucan who plays the Duchess, explains the makeup process.

LIESEL BATUCAN, ACTRESS/ DUCHESS IN ALICE IN WONDERLAND: It helps when you get into character when you actually see yourself, you know, putting on the contour, the lines, the lipstick. It all impacts on the character your playing.

Most if not all theater actors in the production apply their own makeup. Actress Gold Soon explains why.

GOLD SOON, ACTRESS, ALICE IN WONDERLAND: I believe that every actor should know how to put on their own makeup. It helps me put on somebody’s face. It helps center myself, helps me get into character. I have 5 costume changes though out the whole show. The shortest time I have to change from one costume to another is I think 30 seconds!

Actress and Singer Bituin Escalante who plays Queen of Hearts says the costumes designed by Raven Ong sets the mood for the fantasy!

BITUIN ESCALANTE, ACTRESS, ALICE IN WONDERLAND: It’s eyecandy! You have to see the costumes. It’s rich! Well, it’s high art if you think about it. It’s not the usual wonderland!

Joel Trinidad who plays the Mad Hatter says the set by Gino Gonzales is a sight to behold!

JOEL TRINIDAD, ACTOR, ALICE IN WONDERLAND: The concept of the set designer is Japanese origami, so everything looks like folded paper. Very very visually stunning approach to set design and I think people are going to be blown away by it!

Danielle Gana who plays one of the Alices says musical is about living life to the fullest.

DANIELLE GANA, ACTRESS, ALICE IN ALICE IN WONDERLAND: Alice in Wonderland is trying to show audiences, children and adults alike that we shouldn’t take our everyday lives for granted. We should enjoy all the little things and we should always be in a complete state of wonder of everything around us.

The elaborate makeup process, colorful costumes and sets and months of rehearsals guarantees a fun night for children and adults alike. Make your way to the theater or else, as the Queen of Hearts says: It’s off with your head! G Töngi, Rappler, Manila. – Rappler.com
