HIGHLIGHTS: Obama visits Manila | Day 2

MANILA, Philippines – United States President Barack Obama concludes his two-day visit to the Philippines Tuesday, April 29.

In his meeting with Philippine President Benigno Aquino III on Day 1, the two leaders discussed issues on trade and security cooperation, among others. This was hours after the two countries, before Obama arrived, signed an agreement allowing American troops access to Philippine military facilities.

At the joint press conference after the bilateral meeting, Obama did not make a categorical statement of support for the Philippines should China grow more aggressive militarily over its territorial dispute with the Philippines. He only said the US’ interest was in seeing a peaceful resolution of the claims under international law.

The American president showed his more relaxed self as he gave a toast to Philippine-US relations at the state dinner in Malacañang. He praised the legacy of Aquino’s parents in the fight for democracy in the country, cited the two peoples’ common love for basketball and Manny Pacquiao, and honored the Philippines “as ally and friend.”

For Day 2 of his visit, Obama will meet with American and Filipino soldiers at Fort Bonifacio, and will lay a wreath at the American Cemetery in Taguig City. He will grace the launch of E-Vehicle Comet at Sofitel hotel before leaving the country.
