[OPINION | Artwork] Mass Grave
The artwork is part of Tai's illustration series 'Pandemic Patterns'

MANILA, Philippines – The number of coronavirus cases in the Philippines climbed past 30,000 on Sunday, June 21.

In light of this, we called out for artworks that capture this sobering moment in our country’s fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

Upon reviewing the submissions, we chose the piece “Mass Grave” by Manila-based illustrator/animator Kenny Tai.

The artwork is part of Tai’s illustration series “Pandemic Patterns,” where she observes the similarities in pandemic response all over the world: overwhelmed healthcare systems, high death rates, misinformation, cover-ups, mismanagement, and stress.

Tai hopes that her work can help others to reflect on what’s been happening, and “to improve our behavior and the system in our own way, to [shift ourselves away from] repeating history.”
