MANILA, Philippines – Think social media and open-heart surgery don’t mix? Doctors at the Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital in Houson, Texas will prove you wrong.
While a 57-year-old patient was being operated on by Dr Michael Harris on Tuesday, February 21, the progress of his 2-hour double-coronary arterial bypass surgery was being live tweeted by another doctor.
Dr Paresh Patel, Harris’ colleague, posted updates and answered questions from followers of the hospital’s official Twitter account @houstonhospital.
The hashtag #mhopenheart was also used to let other netizens join in the conversation.
He said the event is “an educational look” into bypass surgery. February has been declared Heart Month in the US.
More than a hundred updates were made about the surgery.
The tweets, photos (a number of them graphic), and even video — Macris wore a small camera on his head — were all compiled later by the hospital on a Storify account.
The live tweeting of the surgery was reportedly seen by more than 225,000 viewers, despite the account having only around 5,100 followers.
