JALALABAD, Afghanistan – Taliban suicide bombers on Monday, September 2, attacked a US base near the Pakistani border in eastern Afghanistan, officials said.

No member of the US-led NATO mission in Afghanistan was killed, said a spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) without confirming whether the attack was still underway.

“There were a series of explosions that occurred in the vicinity of a forward operating base in Nangarhar province,” an ISAF spokesman told Agence France-Presse.

“We are currently assessing the situation,” he added.

Afghan officials said the attack took place in Torkham in the eastern province which neighbors Pakistan.

“A group of suicide bombers have attacked a US base in Torkham near the border with Pakistan,” Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, spokesman for the provincial governor, told AFP.

Abdulzai said fighting was ongoing between US and Afghan forces against the militants.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, in a statement sent to the media, claimed responsibility for the attack. – Rappler.com
