MEXICO CITY, Mexico – Mexico’s government said Monday, November 11, it was waiting for information from Venezuela about the passengers and cargo of a Mexican-registered plane that was burned over allegations it was carrying cocaine.

Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong said his government wanted “information based on evidence, real information” regarding the November 4 incident.

“We are still waiting, and we are doing it in a diplomatic manner,” Osorio Chong told a news conference.

He added that Mexico wanted to know “who are the passengers and do they have them?” as well as information about the aircraft’s cargo.

He said Venezuelan officials indicated that the small executive jet was empty after it was ordered to land in the state of Apure last week.

The foreign ministry has summoned the Venezuelan ambassador to Mexico, but he had yet to meet with Mexican officials late Monday.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said Saturday, November 9, he was surprised Mexico had asked for an explanation over a plane he said was “full” of cocaine.

Venezuelan authorities, which have brought down 30 planes in anti-drug operations since last year, showed pictures of the charred remains of the jet’s fuselage after it was destroyed last week.

For its part, the Mexican transport ministry said the seven people aboard the plane, including the pilot and co-pilot, had provided fake identifications and bogus flying licenses.

The plane had flown from the central Mexican state of Queretaro to the Caribbean island of Bonaire, where four passengers got off.

The mysterious plane also had the Honduran port of La Ceiba in its flight plan. – Rappler.com
