WASHINGTON DC, USA – US President Barack Obama on Thursday, March 20, imposed sanctions on more Russian officials, other individuals, and a bank.

Obama also threatened to directly target the Russian economy over Moscow’s absorption of Crimea.

“Russia must know that further escalation will only isolate it further from the international community,” he said at the White House.

Obama made the statement on the crisis in Ukraine as Western leaders prepare a response to Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

Shortly before Obama spoke, Russia’s lower house of parliament rubber stamped President Vladimir Putin’s decision to claim Crimea, despite a threat of tougher Western sanctions. – with reports from Agence France-Presse/Rappler.com
