#OccupyCentral Hong Kong: Through Filipino lens
OFW-turned-photographer Xyza Cruz Bacani takes photos of the protests in Hong Kong

HONG KONG – It all started with a peaceful protest of students calling for the governor’s resignation and chanting democracy. And then all hell broke loose.

On Sunday, September 28, the situation escalated into a riot, a scene I never expected to witness in this city. Equipped with anti-riot gear, policemen faced down  #OccupyCentral protesters with tear gas, rubber bullets and pepper spray. (LIVE BLOG: #OccupyCentral Hong Kong)

But the protesters would not be intimidated, as they defied the cops throughout the night. I saw and felt their passion. It’s overwhelming. But it’s also heartbreaking to see this city divided and scarred, hopefully not for life. (READ: Protests disrupt Hong Kong travel and businesses)

Despite the chaos and the uncertainty, there was no looting, no damaged cars, no broken windows. The young activists just kept on chanting protest slogans. When the police threw teargas at them without provocation, they passed around masks and bottles of water and continued their march.

Emotions were high. People were hurt but they would not give up. In the middle of the night, I saw camaraderie and organization – and a steely resolve to make democracy work. – Rappler.com
