INCHEON, South Korea – Long jumper Maria Londa won Indonesia’s first Asian Games athletics gold since 1998 on Monday, September 29, and said the decision to award the next Asiad to her country had inspired her.
The 2013 South East Asian Games champion hit a personal best of 6.55 meters at Incheon’s Asiad Main Stadium to secure a surprise gold, 11 centimeters clear of Vietnam’s Thi Thu Thao Bui.
The leaping Londa, 24, said she wanted to defend her title when the Games go to Jakarta in 2018.
“I dedicate this gold medal to all of Indonesia. I was really inspired by the decision to give Indonesia the next Asian Games,” she said.
The award to Jakarta this month came 5 months after Vietnam said that it could no longer afford to stage the Olympic-sized event. – Rappler.com
