OAK CREEK, Wisconsin – Local and federal investigators probing an attack on a Sikh temple in the US state of Wisconsin said Sunday, August 5, they are treating the shootings as a “domestic terrorism type incident.”
Local police chief John Edwards told reporters that the gunman and 6 more people had been shot dead during the attack and that 3 people, including a police officer, were wounded in the incident.
“We are treating it as a domestic terrorist incident and therefore the FBI has the resources,” Edwards said, explaining why agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation had joined the investigation.
“Domestic terrorism is terrorism within the confines of the United States. It is within the United States,” he said, recounting how his officers had rushed to the scene of the attack on the suburban temple.
“What we had happen is our officers responded to a 911 call. The officers stopped this from being worse than it could have been,” he said.
“Our officers responded to the scene and did find a victim and we are dealing with that individual. A 20-year veteran was ambushed, shot multiple times. We expect him to recover,” Edwards said.
“And another officer who was on scene was engaged by the suspect. Our officer did engage that individual and that individual is deceased from the actions that our officer took,” he said.
Edwards said that the temple had been evacuated of surviving worshippers and that police had secured the scene. It was not thought at the moment that there were any more attackers, but the investigation was ongoing. – Agence France-Presse
