BRUSSELS, Belgium – Former Norwegian premier Jens Stoltenberg was named the next North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) chief on Friday, March 28, taking over from current secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the alliance said.
“Mr. Stoltenberg will assume his functions as Secretary General as from 1 October 2014, when Mr. Fogh Rasmussen’s term expires after 5 years and two months at the helm of the Alliance.”
Stoltenberg was handed the top NATO post at a meeting of the alliance’s 28 ambassadors.
The 55-year-old, an economist by training, will step in to replace Fogh Rasmussen for a 4-year term, a diplomatic source said. – Rappler.com
