JAKARTA, Indonesia – On Good Friday, March 25, more than 15,000 Catholics attended mass in the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Assumption, Central Jakarta.

Jakarta Cathedral held 3 masses on Good Friday. 

“We prepare the 4,000 chairs for eash service, but there more people attended service than we expected,” Susyana Suwadie, spokeperson of Jakarta Cathedral, told Rappler.

Worshipers came forward one after another to kiss the feet of the image of Jesus to reflect on the Passion of the Christ.

This year, the decoration for Holy Week at the Jakarta Cathedral emphasized the concept of “Go Green.” Decor was made from recycled materials.

Many Catholics from other regions came to attend the mass in Jakarta Cathedral. “We drived for 1.5 hours to come this morning. Every year, We come here to pray,” Dina, a Catholic from Bekasi, West Java, said to Rappler while waiting for the 3 p.m. service. 

Dina attended service with her husband, children and her mother. She added that Good Friday is a day of fasting and abstinence.
