The latest updates on AirAsia QZ8501, Jakarta Governor reshuffles his “uncooperating” subordinates, and two Papua Police officers shot dead at a Freeport site.

1. Ten bodies retrieved as bad weather hampers search

The Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) on Friday said that they have found more bodies of AirAsia QZ8501 victims. “What’s confirmed to me is the total of 10 bodies [retrieved],” says Basarnas Chief Bambang Soelistyo at the agency headquarters in Jakarta on Friday, January 2.

The Disaster Identification Victim (DVI) team has identified the first victim on Thursday, named Hayati Lutfiah. Hayati’s family has taken over the body and she was buried last night in Sidoarjo, East Java. (READ: First AirAsia QZ8501 funeral)

Bad weather again hampered efforts to locate more victims and the wreckage of the jet. The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) said they monitored 3.5 to 4 meter of waves around the search site, making it even more difficult for rescue teams to do their work.

2. ‘Paranoid’, Jakarta Governor reshuffles his administration

Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama on Friday inaugurated 4,676 upper echelon staff of the provincial government, including 3 mayors and one district head. Ahok said that with the new positions, his staff should put the people first and get on full speed to provide the best service for the people. “We will evaluate [their performance] every three months. I won’t give them a chance to stand still. If in three months, their performance is not up to expectations, we will remove them from their post,” he said as quoted by BeritaJakarta.com

Previously, Ahok said that began to get “sick” seeing his subordinates’ performance for not obeying his instructions in putting people first. “I have gotten paranoid with these many rebels. Worst is, they like to stall and not do what I instruct. I’m sick of it,” he said prior to the reshuffle.

The three of them, according to Patridge, were on on-site patrol at 8.30 pm local time. 30 minutes later, security post lost contact with them. When found, the three men were laying on the ground and rushed to the hospital. They were pronounced dead not long after.

The government on Wednesday announced the new lower fuel prices, but it seems the public transport fee will stay the same, according to the Land Transportation Organization (Organda). “IDR900 for a Premium fuel decrease and IDR250 for Diesel can make the public transport fee to go lower yet,” Jakarta Organda chief Shafruhan Sinungan said on Thursday, January 1.

According to him, fuel prices is not the sole factor to determine a public transport fee. “Spare part costs, rupiah exchange rate to the US dollar, manpower wages, and companies’ operational costs are among them,” Shafruhan said as quoted by news portal Detik.com. The Organda will send a letter to the Jakarta Governor explaining their decision. When the central government raised the fuel prices in November 2014, the Organda also raised the public transport fee by 30 percent only a few days after.

5. Too tired? Surabaya Mayor nearly passes out

Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini, who has been offering assistance to the families of AirAsia Flight QZ8501 victims since day one, almost fainted on Thursday afternoon due to exhaustion, reports the Jakarta Post. The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) personnel rushed to help Risma, as she is affectionally called, carrying an oxygen tank. “She is suffering from extreme fatigue and needs oxygen,” says a PMI officer who does not want to be named.

Rappler Indonesia contributor Kartika Ikawati in Surabaya reports that Risma has always been present since the plane went missing on Sunday, Dec. 28. The PMI officer added that Risma is now fine and conscious.
