Police complaints filed against other KPK leaders, Jokowi creates independent team to deal with police-KPK conflict, consumer foundation names airline with most complaints, and more

JAKARTA, Indonesia – The latest developments in the growing crisis between Indonesia’s National Police and Corruption Eradication Commission, and what the president is doing about it, lead our wrap of stories from Indonesia today.

1. Police complaints also filed against other KPK leaders

After the drama surrounding the arrest on Friday, January 23, of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputy chairman Bambang Widjojanto, police reports have also been filed against other KPK leaders in what activists have decried as a systematic attempt to weaken the powerful antigraft agency. KPK deputy chairman Adnan Pandu Praja was reported on Saturday over allegedly manipulating the shares in 2006 of timber company PT Desy Timber, which he was the corporate lawyer for at the time. Another deputy, Zulkarnain, allegedly received a IDR5 billion bribe to stop an investigation in 2008 when he was a prosecutor. And finally, a report has been filed against KPK chairman Abraham Samad alleging he offered to help PDI-P politician Emir Moeis, who in April 2014 was jailed for receiving kickbacks from Alstom.

2. Jokowi creates ‘informal’ independent team to deal with police-KPK conflict

In the wake of harsh criticisms he isn’t doing enough to address the growing conflict between the National Police and the KPK, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo late on Sunday, January 25, announced the creation of an “informal” independent team to tackle the crisis. Consisting of legal experts and former police and KPK officials, the team has been asked to evaluate the leaders of the two institutions, including police chief nominee Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan, whose naming as a corruption suspect by the KPK started the entire mess. Jokowi marks his 100th day in office on Tuesday with praise for bold economic reforms at the start of his term, but with his man-of-the-people image hit by criticisms of his commitment to human rights and fighting corruption.

Lion Air has again topped the Indonesian Consumer Foundation’s (YLKI) annual list of 5 airlines that received most complaints from consumers over the past year, Tempo.co reported. Out of the 61 complaints YLKI received in 2014, mostly about ticket refunds, flight delays and luggage security, 24 were about the airline owned by Indonesian billionaire Rusdi Kirana. Tied for second place were Indonesia AirAsia and Mandala Air with 6 each. Flag carrier Garuda Indonesia and Sriwijaya Air have 5 complaints each.

In 2012, Lion Air also had the most complaints – 19 in total – filed against it with YLKI, according to Kontan.id. The year before that, YLKI asked the government to audit the airline over flight delays. Last year, YLKI again asked for Lion Air’s management to be evaluated because of frequent consumer complaints.

5. Salvage team struggled to lift AirAsia fuselage from sea bed

The second attempt to lift the fuselage of the crashed AirAsia jetliner on Sunday failed as the wreckage sank back to the ocean floor when a rope linking the lifting balloons broke. “We could not fight against nature,” Navy spokesman Manahan Simorangkir said, citing strong currents as the main obstacle, according to the Associated Press. The attempt on Saturday failed because lifting balloons deflated. As of Sunday 70 of the 162 people on board the flight had been found, with most of the victims believed to still be inside the fuselage. – Rappler.com
