Mary Jane Veloso reunites with family
She is reunited with her family briefly, a day after she is spared from facing a firing squad

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Mary Jane Veloso will briefly reunite with her family Thursday, April 30, a day after she was spared from facing a firing squad.

The family of Mary Jane Veloso arrived at Yogyakarta’s Wirongunan prison early Thursday, April, 30, to visit her, before they fly back to the Philippines later in the day.

Veloso, one of 9 people who was set to be executed Wednesday, April 29, was spared at the 11th hour after the Indonesian government delayed her execution, following last-minute pleas from the Philippine government and various groups.

Led by Veloso’s parents, father Cesar and mother Celia, the family arrived at the prison at around 8:30 am local time (9:30 am Philippine time).

Among the visitors were her sons Mark Darren and Mark Daniel, sisters Darling and Maritess, brother Christopher, and ex-husband Michael Candelaria.

They were accompanied by their lawyers and staff from the Philippine embassy in Jakarta.

The 8 other drug trafficking convicts – which included 7 foreigners and one Indonesian – were put to death early Wednesday morning on a prison island after Indonesia defied international criticism and heartrending pleas from relatives.a

In 2010, Indonesia sentenced the 30-year-old Veloso to death on charges of drug smuggling. Veloso, a single mother of two from Nueva Ecija, had flown to Malaysia with the intention of securing a job as a domestic helper.

She claimed that her recruiter, Maria Kristina Sergio, had duped her into flying to Indonesia and bringing a suitcase with 2.6 kilograms of heroin hidden in the lining. Veloso has consistently maintained her innocence.

Sergio turned herself in to Philippine authorities just hours before Veloso was set to face the firing squad in the notorious Nusakambangan prison island.

Indonesia will now wait until Sergio’s case is resolved before it decides on Veloso’s. – Rappler.com
