No deal: House-wife package deal falls apart

Perhaps it would be easier for Wina Lia to find a buyer for her house and a husband separately

JAKARTA, Indonesia — It’s not yet happy-ever-after for Wina Lia, the Indonesian woman who’s selling her house in Yogyakarta along with her hand in marriage. The potential buyer/husband she found has apparently been lying to her.

Just a week ago, Wina happily told media that her unique offer was taken up by Redi Eko Saputra, “a 40-year-old widower from Lampung”. (READ: Indonesian man buys house, gets free wife)

It seemed like a match made in online heaven: Redi said he was looking for a wife when his staff, who saw the ad, gave him Wina’s phone number. At the same time, his children, who are studying in Yogyakarta, have been asking him to move to the city.

The pair spent a month talking on the phone and getting to know each other. Things were going so well that wedding bells were in sight. Everything was already planned, from their first face-to-face meeting to their upcoming pilgrimage to Mecca.

Too good to be true?

But Redi conveniently forgot to mention that he’s still married.

After seeing Redi reported all over media as the would-be husband of Wina, the current wife, Endang Titin Wapriyustia, decided to come out and speak to the media.

“I got married in Banjarsari (in Ciamis, West Java),” she told Vivanews in Solo, Central Java, where she now lives. She said they were married on March 8, 2014.

Endang said she and Redi had known each others since they were teenagers but initially ended up marrying other people. When Endang’s husband passed away two years ago and Redi’s first marriage ended, the two got together again, and eventually wed.

What about Wina?

Poor Wina only found out about Endang through media as well.

“I was surprised when I read in the media that he is married,” she told Kompas.com on Wednesday, May 20.

When Wina confronted Redi, he claimed he was pressured to marry Endang.

“He said he didn’t tell me because he was afraid I would leave him. He apologized and said he’d solve his problem,” she added.

For now, marriage plans are on hold. “I’m going to postpone it, until all of this is finished,” she said.

Just the house, no wife yet

It seems Wina is still willing to sell her house to him, albeit without her hand in marriage.

“I gave him until Sunday to complete the house payment,” she said.

The single-storey house, located in Randu Gunting, Tamanmartani, Kalasan, Sleman, Yogyakarta, costs IDR999 million ($76,500). Built in 2013, it sits on a 523-square-meter lot and has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a fish pond.

“But if he still wants to be my husband, I’ve said it before, the requirement is that he has to be single or a widower,” Wina added.

Warning from the wife

Though she might want to listen to Endang’s warning about Redi.

Endang said Redi had also promised to buy her a big house, cars for her three kids, and take her on a trip to Mecca.

“Those never happened,” she said. “He promised me a pilgrimage trip, but it’s only a promise. I wasn’t given any financial support for a year. This is embarrassing, but I was only given IDR10 million ($760) for the wedding costs and IDR300,000 ($23) for my kids for last year’s Idul Fitri.” — Rappler.com
