Watch a Jakarta play, help transform children's lives
JAKARTA, Indonesia – The sales pitch is really easy: Spend a couple of entertaining hours watching an excellent play in Jakarta, then walk away knowing you've just helped educate Indonesian children in remote areas of the country.
That's what community theater group Jakarta Players is offering you with "Circle Mirror Transformation", an award-winning full-length play from New York that will be performed for the first time in Indonesia in June.
What it's about
Set in a small, artsy town, the play features 4 strangers who all sign up for an "Adult Creative Drama" class: a recently divorced carpenter, a high school junior, a former actress, and the teacher's husband.
They all play the teacher's theater games, making for a lot of funny moments on stage. But as their relationships develop over the course of the summer, the seemingly silly games generate some real-life drama.
“We jumped at the chance to put on a full-length play that celebrates how drama, and drama classes, can touch and transform lives," director Andrew Trigg says.
The New York production of the play, written by Pulitzer Prize-winning American playwright Annie Baker, was so successful that it landed on the top 10 lists of The New York Times and The New Yorker for 2010.
Transforming others' lives
The best part of this is that all profits will go to Taman Bacaan Pelangi (Rainbow Reading Gardens), a foundation that provides libraries for children in remote areas of eastern Indonesia.
"We realize the importance of education and are keen to do what we can to make a direct difference to these children’s lives,” producer Marissa Anita says.
To date, the foundation has opened 29 libraries across 14 islands in eastern Indonesia.
“We’ve provided over 50,000 storybooks, touching the lives of more than 6,000 children aged between 5-13 years," Taman Bacaan Pelangi founder Nila Tanzil says.
"We want to help kids to reach their potential and become agents of change to help break the cycle of poverty.”
