Rote Open International Surfing Competition kicks off
Bali’s Raditya Rondi is being chased by last year’s Asian Surfing Championships champion Dede Suryana from West Java – a competition exciting to watch

JAKARTA, Indonesia – After a 3-year hiatus, the Rote Open International Surfing Competition is back.

The event, as part of the Asian Surfing Championships (ASC), is ongoing Bo’a Beach on the island of Rote, one of the most eastern islands in the Indonesian archipelago.

As the final stop of the ASC 2015 tour season, a champion will be crowned in the Men’s Open division at this event. Bali’s Raditya Rondi is being chased by last year’s ASC champion Dede Suryana from West Java – a competition exciting to watch.

In the ASC Women’s Division, 2013 champion Rina Kitazawa has already earned her 2015 title with her semifinal finish in Taiwan, but will be looking to put the Rp 10 million first place prize money in her pocket while enjoying her first to Rote and the great Bo’a righthander.

A total prize purse of Rp 72,500,000 (approximately $5,500 USD) is up for grabs between the Men’s Open and Women’s Open divisions.

Thanks to the Tourism Department of NTT (Nusa Tenggara Timur) and the Rote Tourism Department, working together with event organizer and sponsor Boa Beach Resort & Villas, the event is back on the ASC surfing schedule with a commitment from the government to make it an annual event once more.

The event also aims to increase tourism in the region.

“We are committed to growing tourism in NTT and brining benefits to the area, especially Rote Island that offers great surf, diving, and its unique culture that we want to share with our international friends across the globe,” said Head of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) Tourism Mr. Welly R. Rohimone.

“We’re excited about the event and look forward to seeing lots of surfers coming to enjoy our waves and beaches here.”

The ASC’s Tipi Jabrik added, “We’ve had some really great events here in the past and it’s been greatly missed by the surfers, as Bo’a is such a high performance wave and the island itself is so rich in culture and scenery. We’re really stoked to have it back on the schedule and hope we can have it as a permanent event in the coming years as well.”

The Rote Open International Surfing Competition is open to all, not just ASC surfers. People are invited to both watch the competition or surf for fun.

The competition runs from November 8 to 12. – Rappler.com
