Indonesian politicians suggest banning websites that back LGBT

JAKARTA, Indonesia – In the latest move from public figures condemning LGBT, a commision at the Indonesian House of Representatives recommended that the Communications and Information Ministry ban websites which promote LGBT.

During a hearing at the house on Thursday, March 3, the majority of Commision I’s members agreed on a 5-point recommendation for the ministry. Two of the poins mentioned were in regards to LGBT.

On one point, the Commission urged the ministry to shut down online sites which “promote and propagandize LGBT’s content” and asked them to issue regulations on that issue.

Another point of the Commision supported the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) in strenghtening supervision of Indonesia’s broadcasting, and asked KPI to punish TV and radio networks that disobey the regulation on LGBT content.

Just recently, the KPI issued a circular prohibiting the broadcasting of “feminine men” on television and radio. The government has also cracked down on social media apps with emojis that represent LGBT like two women or two men.

The latest suggestion to regulate websites is the latest in an unexpected backlash against LGBT with ministers and religious leaders denouncing homosexuality and emboldened hardliners launching anti-gay raids. – Rappler.com
