How does gov’t deal with illegal parking? Deflate tires

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Motorcycle taxi drivers in Jakarta were in for a surprise after the local government had enough of their illegal parking.

On Monday, May 30, a group of motorcycle taxi parked their vehicles illegally in the area underneath the flyover in front of Mal Ambassador on Jalan Satrio as they waited for passengers.

The officials from the Transport Department were not happy with the makeshift parking spots, and deflated tires of the motorcycles – which quicky caused an uproar among drivers.

According to Christianto, head of South Jakarta’s Transport Department who like many Indonesians go by only one name, the area has become a sort of hailing point for taxi riders, so officials acted decisively and deflated tires of waiting motorcycles.

Christianto explained that they deflated the tires of numerous motorcycles as a warning to the them not to use the spot as a waiting area.

According to local media, the Transportation Department often received reports of illegal parking in the Karet Kuningan District, and requests from communites in that area to deal with the problem.
