Pokemon GO-inspired love story hits TV, gets mixed reactions
A local television station airs a movie inspired by the popular mobile app. Would you watch it?

JAKARTA, Indonesia – The hype surrounding augmented reality game Pokemon GO has cooled considerably since it first launched back in July.  But this hasn’t stopped local Indonesian television station SCTV from making a TV movie based around the popular app.

The movie is titled “Kejar Pokemon, Cinta Ku Tangkap” or “Chasing Pokemon, It Is Love That I Catch” and was aired on Sunday, September 4. It can also be seen in its entirety on SCTV’s streaming site, www.vidio.com.

According to SCTV’s description, the movie tells the story of Mas RT, a community leader that has to deal with the problems created by Alisa, an avid Pokemon GO player who cannot seem to pay attention to anything but the app.

These problems range from “colliding with old ladies to crashing into Mas RT’s cart of merchandise.” At one point, Mas RT declares: “The residents of this community do not accept seekers of tuyuls!” Tuyuls are traditional Indonesian demons.

As might be expected, Mas RT ends up happily ever after with Alisa – as he learns to love Pokemon Go, while she learns to be more considerate of others.

Netizens react

The launch of the movie has been met with disbelief by some netizens.

One comedy-oriented Facebook page, called “The Indonesian Ministry of Humor,” commented, “Seriously, is this sinetron for real?”

Other netizens viewed it as a cynical cash grab. One Facebook commenter wrote: “In Indonesia, the important thing is to be marketable so that people watch so that they get high ratings and can sell a lot of ads.”

Another one wrote: “It’s trending now, so they’re chasing ratings…”

One commenter bemoaned the state of Indonesian television, saying, “Indonesia will collapse if it continues like this… What will be the future of our children if they watch things like this…”

But some, on the other hand, seemed to be inspired by the movie. “Is this true?” one commenter asked.”If it is I’ll start looking for Pokemon… Who knows, maybe I’ll find love.”
