LONDON, United Kingdom (UPDATED) –  Areas of Britain’s Houses of Parliament were briefly locked down on Thursday, July 7, after police were called to investigate a suspect package containing white powder, officials said.

The security alert at the upper House of Lords lasted for an hour and a half before police stood down, when the powder was found to be “non-harmful”, a spokesman for the chamber said.

Media reports said it was found in a letter sent to a peer.

“Peers’ car park and parts of the terrace were closed temporarily but have now been reopened, ” the spokesman said.

“The closure was put in place while a package containing a white powder was investigated by specialist police units, which is standard procedure.

“The powder was found to be non-harmful.”

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police told AFP: “The incident has been stood down. It was a suspicious package that had been delivered the Houses of Parliament.
