Royal mourners face rail disruption on journey to Windsor Castle

LONDON – Trains traveling from London to Windsor, where Queen Elizabeth will be buried later on Monday, September 19, were severely disrupted by technical problems, straining the public transport system as tens of thousands travel around the capital.

Great Western Railway (GWR) said that all lines between Paddington and key connection point Reading, were blocked, advising passengers to take an alternative route to Windsor, the town that is home to the Windsor Castle royal residence.

In an update issued at 09:30 GMT, GWR said the disruption was likely to continue for the rest of the day.

Later, the queen’s coffin is due to be driven to Windsor, where she will be buried alongside her late husband Prince Philip in a small chapel in a private ceremony after the funeral. Large crowds are expected throughout the town. – Rappler.com

Saudi Arabia’s crown prince to miss queen’s funeral – source

Saudi Arabia’s de-facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is no longer expected to attend Queen Elizabeth’s funeral on Monday, September 19, a British foreign office source said on Sunday – contrary to Britain’s earlier expectations that he would.

Saudi Arabia would be represented instead by Prince Turki bin Mohammed al Saud, the source said. Prince Turki is a minister of state and has been a member of the cabinet since 2018. He is the grandson of late King Fahd and part of the new generation that has been brought to power by Prince Mohammed.

The change was made by Saudi Arabia, the source added.

Britain has invited heads of state from its allies to attend, but it is up to those nations who to send.

Saudi representation at the funeral has been closely watched for any signs of a further thaw in a diplomatic chill Western countries imposed on Prince Mohammed after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi insider-turned-critic, that US intelligence said was approved by the crown prince.

He has denied any role in the killing. In 2020, Saudi Arabia jailed eight people for between seven and 20 years for Khashoggi’s murder.

Britain’s Prince Andrew pays tribute to ‘mummy, mother, and majesty’

Prince Andrew, Queen Elizabeth’s second son, paid tribute to his mother on Sunday, September 18, saying he would treasure forever her love, compassion, care, and confidence.

Addressing his statement to “Mummy, Mother, Your Majesty,” reflecting the three roles he said Elizabeth had fulfilled during her 70-year reign, Andrew, the Duke of York, said he would miss her “insights, advice, and humor.”

“Mummy, your love for a son, your compassion, your care, your confidence I will treasure forever,” he said.

Reputedly the queen’s favorite son, Andrew has fallen from grace, stripped of the “His Royal Highness” title and removed from royal duties due to a scandal over his friendship with US financier Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender, and a related sex assault allegation.

He has not been charged with any criminal offense and has denied any wrongdoing, but paid to settle a US civil court case.

The 62-year-old prince said he had found his mother’s “knowledge and wisdom infinite, with no boundary or containment.”

“As our book of experiences closes, another opens, and I will forever hold you close to my heart with my deepest love and gratitude, and I will tread gladly into the next with you as my guide.”

Elizabeth, who died on September 8 at the age of 96, will be honored by scores of world leaders and royals from around the globe at a state funeral on Monday, September 19.
