US President Joe Biden on Friday, March 26, announced his intent to nominate US Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel Kritenbrink to serve as Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs.

Kritenbrink gained attention back in February after releasing a rap video to celebrate Tet, the Lunar New Year in Vietnam, alongside Vietnamese musicians.

A fluent Chinese and Japanese speaker, Kritenbrink has a storied background.

Serving as the US ambassador to Vietnam since 2017, Kritenbrink was previously the senior director for Asian Affairs at the National Security Council, and deputy chief of mission at the US embassy in Beijing.

He also previously served as political minister Ccunselor, and as a political officer. Kritenbrink was director of the Office of Chinese and Mongolian Affairs at the Department of State, and served as a political-military officer at the US embassy in Tokyo.

Kritenbrink’s nomination, which requires Senate confirmation, comes alongside that of Brian Nichols, who was tapped to serve as an assistant secretary of state of the US State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, and Brett Holmgren, tapped as assistant secretary of state for intelligence and research. – Rappler.com
