MANILA, Philippines – Have you ever felt insecure because of the way you look or act? Have you ever felt pressured to appear a certain way just to get the approval or attention of others?
You’re not alone. Even if we’re reaching a new height of progressiveness in our society, it is still a common impulse for people to judge others based on looks. Women, in particular, are vulnerable to this.
Today, there are still women pressured to conform to the looks of celebrities, models and famous personalities to gain confidence and respect from their peers. Appearance-altering apps can now change the way, for instance, your skin naturally looks, which increases the pressure to have almost unattainable porcelain skin in real life. Some even go as far as changing their natural facial features, going under the knife for reasons that may not be self-serving.
When women are described based on their looks first, they may think that it’s all they have to offer besides their talents and capabilities.
Besides looks, women are also pressured to behave a certain way and to live up to pre-existing roles. They are still being discriminated against for choosing career paths that aren’t typically taken by females, for making life choices that differ from settling down with a husband and kids, as well as owning their sexuality just as a typical male would. These things are all natural to women just as they are to men, if only society didn’t dictate it as such.
On September 29, Thursday, in partnership with Maybelline Philippines, we discussed how women can embrace their naturally beautiful selves with confidence. You shared with us your thoughts and let your voices be heard, empowering yourself (and others!) to accept our personal insecurities and let our natural beauty shine in spite of them.
