MANILA, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III will travel on Friday, June 7, to Myanmar to attend the World Economic Forum on East Asia.

In an interview with reporters on Monday, June 3, he said he will also meet with Myanmar President Thein Sein as well as pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi at the WEF event.

He said he will invite these leaders, as well as other WEF participants, to the Philippines, which will host the same event in 2014.

“It’s a tradition that you invite the participants to—the host country invites the participants prior to the conduct. Then, I’ll be meeting President Thein Sein and also Madame Aung San Suu Kyi,” Aquino said.

This event represents the Asian version of the WEF held in Davos, Switzerland. Aquino attended and was well received in Davos last January.

Aquino is echoing WEF’s advocacy for inclusive growth and is keen on banking on these events to highlight the Philippines’ economic gains.

The Palace has yet to release the full details of Aquino’s Myanmar trip.

A statement from the WEF website said the event would be attended by over 900 participants from 55 countries. They will convene in Nay Pyi Taw on June 5 to 7 under the theme, “Courageous Transformation for Inclusion and Integration.”

The Philippines has been vocal in its support for democracy in Myanmar and the release of Nobel Price Prize awardee Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest. Suu Kyi was released in November of 2010 after being in detention for 15 of the past 21 years since she entered politics in 1988.
