MANILA, Philippines – The 20-megawatt (MW) Maibarara power plant began commercial operations in Sto. Tomas, Batangas last Saturday, February 8.

It is the first geothermal power facility started up under the Aquino administration.

The power plant is made up of 3 parts – the steamfield, the power plant itself, and the transmission facility – and was launched after an extended facility testing by Maibarara Geothermal Inc. (MGI). The steamfield underwent testing in the second quarter of 2013, while the power plant started testing in the third quarter of 2013.

MGI’s power plant links to the Luzon grid via a 5-kilometer long, 115 kilovolt (kV) transmission line through Manila Electric Company’s (Meralco) distribution system. It was synchronized to the Luzon grid on November 4, in coordination with Meralco and the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

MGI is a joint venture company, with PetroGreen Energy Corporation (PGEC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of PetroEnergy Resources Corporation (PERC), holding 65% ownership. TransAsia Oil and Energy Development Corporation (TAO) and PNOC Renewables Corporation also own 25% and 10% of MGI, respectively.

While MGI designed and built the steamfield, the power plant was built by EPC contractor EEI Corporation. Fuji Electric of Japan supplied the main plant equipment. The power plant began contstruction in April 2012.

MGI also received permission from Philippine Electricity Market Corporation (PEMC) to participate in the electricity spot market. PEMC is the spot market’s operator.

The Energy Regulatory Commission approved the Certificate of Compliance (COC) of MGI’s project. The COC approval allowed MGI to begin commercial operations of the geothermal facility. – Rappler.com
