MANILA, Philippines – If you loved “Bridesmaids” (starring Saturday Night Live‘s Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph), then you will definitely love Girls.

This is just one of the things we’ve heard about the HBO original series, created by producer, writer and actress Lena Dunham.

Dunham rose to fame in 2010 with the independent film Tiny Furniture, a movie she wrote, directed and starred in. Tiny Furniture premiered at the 2010 South-by-Southwest Film Festival, and won the award for “Best Narrative Feature.” Dunham also brought home an award for being an “emerging narrative woman director.”

It was also because of the movie that Nora Ephron reached out to Dunham, taking the latter under her wing as her protegee. Dunham has been compared to Tina Fey and Woody Allen, and dubbed the “future of screen comedy” by Total Film magazine.

Girls is about 4 twenty-somethings — Hannah, Marnie, Jessa and Shoshanna — who are trying to figure life out. They’ve been living in New York for a couple of years, but they’re still not sure what they want: from boys, from each other, from themselves. And things aren’t getting any clearer.

The main cast is composed of Lena Dunham as Hannah Horvath; Allison Williams as Marnie Michaels; Jemima Kirke as Jessa Johansson; Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro; and Adam Driver as Adam Sackler.

Aside from Dunham, Judd Apatow (husband of actress Leslie Mann, producer of 40-Year-Old Virgin, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and Bridesmaids) and Jenni Konner also executive produce.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Appatow said that “Girls would provide men with an insight into ‘realistic females’,” while Dunham said the series reflects a part of the population not portrayed in the 1998 HBO series Sex and the City.”

Some critics have described the show as “raw, humorous and refreshing” (Metacritic), while others say it lacks cultural diversity, something Dunham says will be addressed in the second season.
