GMA writer on ‘Arrow,’ ‘Alyas Robin Hood’ comparisons
Suzette Doctolero says the story of 'Alyas Robin Hood' is different from the CW's show 'Arrow'

MANILA, Philippines – One of the writers of the upcoming show Alyas Robin Hood has reacted to the comparisons between the show and CW’s Arrow.

On Tuesday, August 30, GMA Head Writer Suzette Doctolero, who also writes for the show Encantadia, took to social media to address the claims that Alyas Robin Hood is a rip-off of Arrow.

This, after after comments on the show’s teaser trailer called out the GMA network on lack of originality, saying that Alyas is a rip-off of Arrow.

She also reacted to a poster that was in a LionHearTV article, of Alyas star Dingdong Dantes dressed as a hooded man was used along with a photo of co-star Megan Young.

(I repeat, to clarify the matter: the article that came out on LionhearTV with the poster of Alyas Robin Hood is misleading because the poster they used that was a rip-off from Arrow is not material from GMA 7. I think the blog did not do its research well and immediately assumed it was from GMA 7.)

According to Suzette, the poster is possibly fan art. She also added that even though they were both inspired by Robin Hood, the two shows’ stories are very different.

(The said poster is possibly a fan made. Or it was just made to destroy Alyas Robin Hood by making it look like it was a rip-off of Arrow. So it is useless to debate on whether it’s a rip-off, because the poster is not from Alyas Robin Hood.)

(We have not come out with a poster for the show except for a teaser that was seen on our network.)

LionhearTV has since issued a statement on the poster, confirming that it is fan-made: “But LionhearTV would like to clarify that the featured image on that article is not the official poster of the upcoming Dingdong Dantes series. It was a fan-made art attached to the article to add visuals and not intended to confuse readers as the real series poster.”

Stephen Amell, who plays the main character Oliver Queen in Arrow, has also seen the teaser and shared it on his Facebook page, along with a shocked emoji. Stephen’s post has comments from apologetic Filipino fans.

Inspired by ‘Robin Hood’

On the possible similarities between Arrow and Alyas, Suzette said, “Ibang-iba po ang kwento ng Alyas Robin Hood sa Arrow. Malayo.

(The story of Alias Robin Hood is different from Arrow. It’s very different.)

“Ang Alyas Robin Hood ay homage/inspired sa Robin Hood, at ito ay Filipino modern retelling nito lalo’t ang nasabing British Folktale na tumatalakay ng social injustice ay napapanahon pa rin. Hindi ito gaya sa Arrow (na palagay ko ay mula sa Green Archer/Robin Hood at Batman hehe) o sa Green Archer na pawang mga inspired din sa dakilang obra na Robin Hood pero binigyan din nila ng ibang twist.”

(Alyas Robin Hood is a homage/inspired by Robin Hood, and this is a Filipino modern retelling, especially the said British folktale that tackles social injustice, which is still a relevant topic today. This is not like Arrow (which I think is based on Green Arrow/Robin Hood and Batman hehe) or Green Archer that were all inspired from the Robin Hood storyline, but were also given a different twist.)

In Arrow, Oliver Queen as the Green Arrow shoots weaponized arrows to fight for those who can’t fight for themselves. DC Comics describes the character as a “modern-day Robin Hood.”

Suzette further clarified the differences of the two shows to Pepsaying, The lead character ng Arrow ay isang bilyonaryong playboy na naging vigilante.

(The lead character of Arrow is a billionaire playboy who became a vigilante. Alyas Robin Hood is a poor man who has experienced social injustice. Robin Hood was the inspiration for both Arrow and Alyas Robin Hood, so both [characters] have a bow and arrow and a hood, because it’s Robin Hood.)

Other than the teaser and the details mentioned by Suzette, details of the show’s plot have yet to be released.

Arrow is based on the DC Comics character The Green Arrow. In the show, Stephen plays Oliver, a rich and powerful figure from Starling City. Oliver returned to the city after being stranded on an island, and fought crime and corruption as a vigilante using a bow and arrow. – Rappler.com

Editor’s Note: A version of this story incorrectly spelled the name of the character Oliver Queen. This has been corrected.
