MANILA, Philippines – The fans have their wish. After a fervent Facebook petition to bring Broadway musical “Wicked” here, BroadwayWorld.com announced on August 2 that the show is coming to Manila.

No details of show dates and show venues were released but fans can expect more announcements on August 14.

The original Broadway production of “Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz,” written by composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz in 2003, won 3 Tony Awards, along with a Grammy and 6 Drama Desk Awards. A box office record-breaker, it grossed US$2.9 million in ticket sales just in its final week on Broadway in 2012.

“Wicked” is based on Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel, “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West,” a revisionist look at the world and characters in L. Frank Baum’s classic, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.”

The musical revisits the magical land of Oz before Dorothy’s arrival from Kansas. An unlikely friendship is forged between two girls: the feisty, misunderstood emerald-skinned Elphaba and the beautiful and popular Glinda.

Their opposing personalities come to a head as they fall for the same man, confront the Wizard’s corrupt government, and eventually meet their destinies to become the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North.

Idina Menzel played Elphaba or the Wicked Witch in the original Broadway production, and Kristin Chenoweth played Glinda or the Good Witch.

“Defying Gravity,” “Popular,” and “For Good” are some of the hit songs from the musical.
