MANILA, Philippines – There’s a Filipino restaurant getting a lot of buzz in the US.
Bad Saint, a restaurant located in Washington DC, was ranked second out of the 10 restaurants featured in Bon Appetit‘s “America’s Best New Restaurants of 2016.”
The restaurant is a 24-seater, run by Filipino-American chef Tom Cunanan with co-owners Genevieve Villamora and Nick Pimentel.
“Their food is personal, but it’s so much more than just dishes they ate as kids. Bad Saint is the kind of place I spend all year searching for,” wrote Bon Appetit editor Andrew Knowlton.
On Bad Saint’s okoy, Knowlton said he found it to be “as addictive as a Bloomin’ Onion [a fried onion cut to resemble a flower] but 50 times more delicious.”
Knowlton also wrote about eating adobong dilaw – Filipino-American chef Tom Cunanan’s recipe, “born of tons of research on the dish’s regional quirks and a lot of tinkering” – and sipping lambanog.
On Facebook, the owners of Bad Saint said they were flattered by the recognition.
“Our cheeks are flushed; our heads are spinning. We’re so honored to be in this year’s #BAhot10.
“We’ve got a lot of gratitude.
“Many many thanks to our energetic, lovely guests; our friends and colleagues on the DC restaurant scene; and our neighbors on 11th street in Columbia Heights – for all of your graciousness and encouragement.
“Special thanks to our family and friends, our boosters and cheerleaders from our earliest days.”
