DOT Undersecretary Kat de Castro decides to cancel the show after a complaint from Davao-based fashion designers

MANILA, Philippines – The organizers of the Miss Universe pageant have decided to cancel the cultural fashion show in Davao City scheduled for January 19. This, after the Davao Fashion Design Council (DFDC) expressed dismay that Davao-based designers were not asked to the dress the candidates.

In a statement posted on her Facebook page, Department of Tourism (DOT) undersecretary Kat de Catstro said they will no longer push through with the show to avoid any more issues over the matter.

“As head of the ancillary events of the DOT for Miss Universe, I have decided to cancel the fashion show in Davao City.

“This is to prevent controversies that may arise from the statement made by the local designers of Davao City. Thank you very much.”

On Tuesday, December 13, the DFDC released a statement that aired on TV Patrol, where they expressed disappointment over not being asked to dress any of the candidates.

Batangas-born fashion designer Renee Salud was set to dress the candidates for the show.

Aside from picking a non-Mindanaoan, the designers also said they were further insulted when they were asked to dress the local models instead. (READ: Davao designers criticize Miss Universe org over cultural fashion show)

Salud, meanwhile, said that he never meant to insult the Davao-based designers, explaining that he was approached by DOT Secretary Wanda Teo to do the show.

“I’m very sorry kung na-insulto sila (if they felt insulted) but I don’t mean to harm them,” said Salud.

The Miss Universe pageant is set to be held in the country in January 2017. The Philippines’ Pia Wurtzbch will crown her successor on January 30 in Manila. – Rappler.com
