Aside from Spanish, Filipino or Tagalog is the most widely spoken language in California and Nevada in the US

MANILA, Philippines – In California and Nevada, Filipino or Tagalog is the next most widely spoken second language at home after Spanish, while in Hawaii, Filipino comes next to English as the most widely spoken language, according to a report on online news website Slate.

The US Census Bureau American Community Survey revealed very interesting data on the most common languages spoken at home, which were transformed into maps by Ben Blatt of Slate.

Filipino is one of 6 languages with over a million speakers in the United States. The others are Chinese, Vietnamese, French, Korean, and German.

The maps revealed that overall, Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the US with over 36 million speakers. In California and Nevada, which covers a large portion of the west coast, Tagalog is the next most widely spoken language after English and Spanish.

Of the 3 million Filipinos living in the US, about 1.5 million are in California.

Las Vegas, Nevada, also has a large Filipino American community.

While historians say Filipinos landed in California in 1587 in Morro Bay in California, the Filipino population began booming in the 20th century. Filipino migrant farmworkers, mostly from the Ilocos region and from the Visayas, found opportunities in Hawaii and California in the early 1900s. Another wave of Filipino migrants followed in the 1960s.
