MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Azkals Under-23 team and the Singapore Under-23 raised a total of SG$50,000 for the victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in a charity match on Sunday, December 1, at the Hougang Stadium in Singapore.

Singapore won over the Azkals U23, 6-0.

The Azkals finished the first half down by only 1 before 5 different members of the Singapore U23 poured in their last 5 goals in the second half.

The Philippine Azkals Facebook page posted a comment in one of their game updates, saying “SG (Singapore) continued with their training for SEAG (Southeast Asian Games). We did not.

This is not the first charity game to have been arranged by different parties to help in the relief efforts for victims of the typhoon in the Visayas.

There was Fastbreak 2, a basketball charity game organized by the Ravena family, and there is the upcoming Champions for a Cause happening on Saturday, December 7, at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

Champions for a Cause will feature a game between UAAP Season 76 champions De La Salle Green Archers and NCAA Season 89 champions San Beda Red Lions.

Local and international sports personalities have also pooled resources and raised money in various ways.

The local volleyball community, PBA players, the Gilas Pilipinas team, and boxing champ Manny Pacquiao have auctioned off sports memorabilia, with proceeds going to Yolanda victims.

NFL quarterback Tim Tebow, who was born in the Philippines, is raising funds for Yolanda survivors through his foundation.

The NBA and Pau Gasol of the Los Angeles Lakers have extended their help through UNICEF.

PBA players also recently visited Tacloban City, one of the cities heavily devastated by the typhoon, to give basketballs and rings to children. – Rappler.com
