Fire hits Ateneo de Zamboanga

ILOILO CITY, Philippines (3rd UPDATE) – A fire hit the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) campus on Thursday morning, July 7.

The fire started at around 7:30 am and hit Brebeuf Gymnasium, Manuel Sauras Hall (2 floors of the cafeteria, College of Law), and Xavier Hall in the university’s La Purisima campus. Fire out was declared at 9:48 am.

There were no casualties.

The university administration is still waiting for the official investigation to know the cause of the fire, while the extent of the damage has yet to be determined.

The following offices were affected by the fire:

• Assistant to the Academic Vice-President
• Academic Vice-President
• School of Education
• School of Management and Accountancy
• University Registrar
• School of Liberal Arts
• College of Nursing
• Center of Information Technology Services Computer Laboratories (Advanced and Basic Laboratories)

The fire razed Brebeuf Gym, the oldest structure in the university. Built in 1949, it stood for 67 years.

Classes have been called off until further notice, according to the school’s administration. Some equipment like computers were spared from the fire and documents from the registrar’s office are intact, the school added. – Rappler.com
