Police file murder, multiple murder charges vs Davao blast suspect
(UPDATED) Multiple cases of murder and frustrated murder are filed against Abubakar Zulkifli and 8 others

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Davao police are set to file charges against the prime suspect in a September 2 blast that killed 15 people, city police chief Senior Superintendent Michael John Dubria said on Wednesday, September 14.

In a press briefing, Dubria said they have enough evidence, including testimonies from witnesses, to pin down the suspect.

Multiple cases of murder and frustrated murder were filed against a certain Abubakar Zulkifli and 8 others before the Davao City prosecutor’s office, according to reports reaching Camp Crame.

Dubria declined to disclose the affiliation of the suspect. “I don’t want to make a premature statement about it,” he added.

Police said they are still investigating the possible mastermind of the blast.

At least 15 people died and over 70 injured when an improvised explosive device, made up of two mortar rounds, exploded at a popular night market in Davao City on September 2.

The blast happened on Roxas Street in the bustling Mindanao city on the same night President Rodrigo Duterte, long-time Davao mayor, was in his hometown.

Duterte went to the site himself hours after the blast.

The city government, headed by Duterte’s eldest daughter Sara, had earlier announced a P3 million (from the original P2 million) prize for information that would lead to the arrest of the blast suspect.

Initial reports indicated that the Abu Sayyaf Group claimed responsibility for the blast but this was later denied by the group. Police are looking at various motives for the blast, including possible links to the administration’s “war on drugs.”
