The Philippine Coast Guard says over 10,000 passengers are stranded in ports in Central, Western, and Eastern Visayas; Northern Mindanao; and Bicol

MANILA, Philippines – Over 10,000 passengers were stranded in ports in parts of the Visayas, Mindanao, and Bicol on Friday, November  25 because of Tropical Storm Marce (Tokage).

The Philippine Coast Guard said that as of 8 am on Friday, 10,251 passengers were stranded in ports in Central, Western, and Eastern Visayas; Northern Mindanao; and Bicol.

The PCG has grounded 1,401 rolling cargoes, 161 vessels, and 58 motorized boats in ports in the affected areas.

At least 300 passengers, including foreign tourists, were stranded at the Caticlan and Cagban ports in Malay, Aklan, at the height of Tropical Storm Marce, according to the Malay Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO).

The PCG suspended boat trips between Boracay Island and Caticlan on Friday as Aklan was placed under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 2. Authorities also suspended island-hopping and  other recreational water activities around the island-resort.

Motorized boats were allowed to travel to Boracay until 10 pm on Thursday, but operations of  roll-on roll-off (RoRo) vessels bound for Caticlan Port, and motor bancas from Caticlan port to Looc, Romblon, were temporarily suspended on Thursday morning.

Marce is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Sunday, November 27. – with a report from Boy Ryan Zabal/Rappler.com
