MANILA, Philippines – A fourth year high school student brought home the Philippines’ first gold medal from a prestigious international math competition held in July in China.

Adrian Reginald Sy of St Jude Catholic School won the gold medal in the 11th China Southeast Mathematical Olympiad (CSMO) in Fuyang City, Zhejiang, China from July 25 to 30.

It is the country’s first gold medal in the CSMO since joining it in 2005, noted Dr Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainer Guild-Philippines (MTG).

“It’s a tough contest and we are happy that one of our contestants finally won it,” Chua said.

Determined to win the gold medal, Sy said he trained hard for the contest.
