MANILA, Philippines – Just wait.

Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda on Friday, August 22, urged the public to simply “wait for the endorsement of the President” following reports that other Aquino familiy members are supporting the presidential bid of opposition leader Vice President Jejomar Binay.

Reacting to statements made by an uncle of President Aquino that he would be supporting Binay in the 2016 presidential race, Lacierda said: “Everybody has his own opinion on who their preferences are for 2016.”

During the 31st death anniversary of the late Senator Ninoy Aquino on Thursday, August 21, his brother Butz told reporters that he and his other relatives are supporting Binay. The statement came weeks after the President’s youngest sister, Kris, said she and her sisters were open to the prospect of endorsing the vice president.

A former human rights lawyer, Binay was appointed OIC mayor of Makati by former President Corazon Aquino in 1986, when she became president after the EDSA People Power Revolution.

But President Aquino is known to be grooming Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas to replace him. The two belong to the ruling Liberal Party.

Lacierda said the President also has yet to decide on whether to push for a term extension, an idea Aquino first acknowledged as something he’d be open to if the people willed it. The Constitution currently prohibits re-election after a president’s 6-year term.

The LP plans to hold a meeting next week to discuss Charter change and other party issues. – Rappler.com
