NDF: Civilian victims in Agusan ambush ‘most unfortunate’
The National Democratic Front says it is ready to indemnify the civilian victims of the New People's Army ambush in Agusan del Norte on November 30

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines – The National Democratic Front (NDF) on Tuesday, December 9, said it is “most unfortunate” that some civilians, including an 8-year-old girl, were hurt in a New People’s Army ambush on a local official and his supporters in Rosario, Agusan del Sur, in November.

NDF-Mindanao spokesman Jorge Madlos made the statement more than a week after the NPA attacked an ambulance carrying Barangay Marfil chairman Emillio Solidor Jr.

Four civilians were killed, while 4 more – including Mae Roselyn Adonis, 8, and Solidor – were wounded in the November 30 attack.

Madlos said the NPA will “indemnify” the victims, even as he reiterated the NDF’s “adherence” to the Comprehensive Agreement on the Respect for Human Rights and the International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL) signed between the government and the NDF.

Maria Malaya, NDF spokesperson in Norteastern Mindanao, said the other NPA targets were the security detail of the barangay captain, whom she described as “legitimate targets,” but the rebels were not aware that the ambulance had some civilians.

“To the families and the people, we reiterate that the death of civilians was unintentional.  Because our comrades erred, it is our responsibility to indemnify the civilians who were killed and wounded,” she said.
