MANILA, Philippines – Military units conducting maritime patrols over Philippine territorial waters are prepared to help in the search for the missing AirAsia plane.

Philippine military chief General Gregorio Capatang Jr directed the Philippine Navy and Philippine Air Force “to stand ready to provide assistance when needed,” Maj Harold Cabunoc, Army spokesperson, said in a statement.

Two C-130s, two Fokker planes, one Islander and the Navy vessel (PF-16) are on standby for deployment, Cabunoc noted. 

The Indonesian military, as well as Search and Rescue (SAR) teams from both Indonesia and Singapore, are leading ongoing operations to find the missing AirAsia flight QZ8501.

 

AirAsia earlier confirmed on December 28 it lost contact with the Airbus A320-200, which was en route to Singapore from Surabaya, Indonesia.
