MANILA, Philippines – A magnitude 5.3 earthquake hit Batangas on Saturday afternoon, January 17.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that the tectonic quake struck at 1:09 pm local time 19 kilometers northwest of Calatagan, Batangas, with a depth of 118 kilometers.

No damage is expected but Phivolcs said there may be aftershocks. 

Phivolcs said the following intensity was felt in several areas:

  • Intensity III – Paluan, Oriental Mindoro
  • Intensity II – Quezon City
  • Intensity I – Puerto Galera.
