Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte appeals to the public to wait for the mining EO to be released before commenting on it

MANILA, Philippines – Malacanang is appealing to stakeholders to read and examine first the executive order (EO) on mining that will be released on Monday, July 9, before criticizing it.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said this in a radio interview on Sunday, July 8, when asked about the fears and doubts previously expressed by local officials on the much-awaited order.

President Benigno Aquino III has already signed the EO, which spells out a policy that seeks to balance the interests of all stakeholders in the industry. Malacanang will release it on Monday, July 9.

Waiting in the wings are some 40 governors whose areas host mining operations. Led by Albay Governor Joey Salceda, they reportedly plan to challenge the EO before the Supreme Court because of a supposed provision that disregards their autonomy in enacting their own ordinances in favor of national laws.

“Let’s all wait first for the release of the EO. Let’s not listen to hearsays that claim what the EO says. After we have presented the EO, let’s all read and study it, then that’s the time when we could comment on it,” Valte said in Filipino.

Valte added that the Malacanang is ready to defend the EO if challenged in the Supreme Court. – Rappler.com
