The endangered turtles are believed to be bound for the Chinese seafood market.

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Philippines – A crack unit of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Maritime Group uncovered on Thursday, July 12, a smuggling operation of endangered giant sea turtles in Bataraza, southern Palawan. It is believed to be bound for the Chinese seafood market.

Palawan-based PNP Maritime-Special Boat Unit (SBU) head Col. Rico Payungga told reporters they have so far confiscated an estimated 50 marine turtles–weighing between 50 to 70 kilos each–in nearby Bahayan Island, a remote community in the southernmost municipality of Balabac.

Marine sea turtles are classified endangered. It is illegal to trade them.

Acting on a tip, the SBU team led by PInsp. Demetrio Sabbaluca discovered the turtles in vegetated areas. At least two were reportedly found dead.

According to residents, the turtles are kept there until they are fetched by a Chinese trader supposedly enjoying connections with local officials.

The SBU team are still conducting search operations in the island.

In June, the same team raided a temporary holding area of live sea turtles in Ameril Island, where they confiscated 17 turtles. Several local Moro traders were implicated in the illegal trading activity. – Rappler.com
