PH pays tribute to Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines joined the international community in honoring former Singapore prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, who died Monday, March 23.

Calling Lee a statesman, Malacañang, in a statement, said that the founding leader of Singapore “demonstrated an unswerving devotion to his country, turning it into a state that would be an exemplar of efficient, modern, and honest governance.”

“The development of Singapore has earned it the respect of nations and peoples, including the tens of thousands of Filipinos who work there and visit the country,” the statement said.

President Benigno Aquino III also “extends his personal condolences” to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the son of the former leader.

“An era has passed, one upon which Singaporeans can look back on with deep pride and a sense of accomplishment,” the Palace statement added.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), in a separate statement, also said Lee was a “visionary statesman” who “built Singapore into an economic powerhouse and modern society that has been a positive force not only in the region but also in the world.”

“His fortitude, political will and wisdom will continue to be an inspiration in the years to come,” the DFA added.

Lee, who dominated Singapore politics for more than half a century, had been in hospital since February 5 with severe pneumonia. He passed away early Monday morning at the age of 91. – With a report from Agence France-Presse/Rappler.com
