Emong exits; LPA now west of Batangas

MANILA, Philippines – Tropical storm Emong (international codename Leepi) has exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility early Thursday, June 20, while the low pressure area west of Luzon continues to move closer to land.

Emong was spotted 570 km northeast of Basco, Batanes (25.5°N, 124.8°E) as of 4 am Thursday, carrying maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h and gusts of up to 90 km/h.

It is moving faster at a speed of 22 km/h, state weather bureau PAGASA said in its 24-hour forecast.

Emong, however, continues to enhance the Southwest Monsoon, the bureau said, and will bring moderate to occasionally heavy rain and thunderstorms over western parts of Luzon and Visayas.

On the other hand, the low pressure area first spotted Wednesday afternoon (June 19) was located 450 km west of Tanauan, Batangas (14.5°N, 116.5°E) as of 4 am Thursday.

Monsoon rains will prevail over Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, and Bicol, the bureau said.

The rest of Luzon, the Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, and Caraga will have cloudy skies accompanied by light to moderate rain.

The rest of Mindanao will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain and thunderstorms.
