MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) – Tropical Storm Basyang (Kajiki) on Saturday, February 1, has weakened into a tropical depression as it approaches northern Palawan.

In its 11 am update, state weather bureau PAGASA said Basyang now has maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometer per hour near the center, which was estimated 339 km northeast of Puerto Princesa City or 152 km southeast of Coron, Palawan.

The tropical depression is expected to be either 521 km northwest of Puerto Princesa City or outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Sunday morning.

It is also expected to cross Northern Palawan, and will exit to the West Philippine Sea.

As of Saturday morning, 10 areas remain under storm signal no. 1, with winds of 30-60 km/h expected within the next 36 hours:

  • Romblon
  • Palawan including Calamian Group of Islands
  • Southern part of Oriental Mindoro
  • Southern part of Occidental Mindoro
  • Negros Occidental
  • Guimaras
  • Aklan
  • Capiz
  • Antique
  • Iloilo

Rainfall amount was estimated to be from 5-15 mm/h or moderate to heavy within the 400 km diameter of Basyang. PAGASA said areas under signal no. 1 should be alert against possible flashfloods and landslides.

Fishing boats and small seacrafts were advised against venturing into the eastern seaboard of Central Luzon, eastern seaboard and southern seaboards of Southern Luzon and eastern seaboard of Visayas due to the surge of Northeast Monsoon.

Basyang madde landfall early Friday evening, January 31, earlier than PAGASA’s initial forecast of a landfall around Saturday midnight. – Rappler.com
