Like Pope Francis, people should not judge – young LGBTs
'There’s nothing wrong with living the life God gave you; you just have to accept who you are'

MANILA, Philippines – As the screen played Pope Francis’ message to the youth at the University of Sto. Tomas, a group of young lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transexuals (LGBT) listened intently to the pope’s message.

Among them was Richard Miranda, a transgender from Navotas. According to Richard, she is willing to endure the growing crowds and nonstop drizzle just to see Pope Francis.

“I’m really excited to see him. It’s my only chance to see the highest priest in the world. I want to experience his mercy and compassion,” said Richard.

She did not mind the stares and silent whispers her group got from other Catholic devotees. Like the Pope’s message, she said, people should not judge others.

In 2013, Pope Francis reached out to the LGBT community, declaring that it is not his place to judge them – while also condemning the Vatican’s reported gay lobby as a “serious problem.”

“We really shouldn’t judge people. We need to respect our own views and feelings. We have our own goals in life,” Richard added.

“It’s not wrong to be homosexual. Like other Filipinos, we work hard for our families and help the Philippine economy,” Richard added.

‘It takes courage

Another member of the group, Rammeld Moran said LGBTs actually have stronger faith and hearts than other people.

“When we decided to be gay, we stood by our decision despite the circumstances. It’s a decision we live by,” she said.

Rammeld added: “Life would be easier if people minded their own lives. Only God has the right to judge us.”

She said she admires Pope Francis for his show of acceptance to LGBTs.

“There’s nothing wrong with living the life God gave you. You just have to accept who you are,” Rammeld concluded. – With reports from Ram Talabong/Rappler.com
