MANILA, Philippines – As other teams bring in their imports for the upcoming mid-season Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner’s Cup, popular ball club Barangay Ginebra San Miguel has also secured their own import.

Basketball agent Sheryl Reyes announced via her Twitter account that Ginebra’s Commissioner’s Cup import will be 6-foot-7 forward Leon Rodgers.

Rodgers, 33, is a 3-time Dutch League Most Valuable Player (MVP) and is currently ranked as the 6th scorer in the Chinese Basketball Association, for which he is still currently playing.

The American cager out of Northern Illinois University joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) Draft in 2002 but went undrafted. Since then, he has travelled all over the world participating in various basketball leagues, offering his offensive prowess to teams in countries such as Germany, France, the Netherlands, China and Puerto Rico, among others.

According to Reyes, who has scouted him for years, Rodgers’ “scoring ability and workhorse never-say-never attitude will be a big factor for Ginebra.”

She added: “He will be a very great addition to that team and will be able to contribute a lot since his basketball IQ is high and his experience will bring a lot of motivation to that team.”

Known to be a prolific scorer wherever he went, Rodgers has normed double digit figures in the leagues he particiapted in.

He averaged 19.9 points per game (PPG) for the Eiffel Towers Nijmegen in Holland in 2005, and 21.8 PPG for the Eiffel Towers Den Bosch in 2006. But one of his biggest achievements was norming 35.0 PPG, 8.5 rebounds per game and 3.3 assists per game for Jilin in China. He was known to have scored more than 60 in two consecutive games and made 15 3-pointers in a game.

Reyes says Rodgers is still very much an offensive juggernaut, which is why he is a regular import for the Chinese league.

Rodgers will finish his stint in China on February 16 and will return to the US before arriving in Manila on February 24.

He will be backing up a Ginebra squad who just lost to rivals San Mig Super Coffee Mixers in a gruelling semifinal series that went the distance. – Rappler.com
