Purves says Fajardo is game-time decision against Ginebra

MANILA, Philippines – Gregzilla versus The Kraken may not happen just yet. 

San Miguel Beermen active consultant Todd Purves said Sunday, March 9 before their 5PM game that sophomore big man June Mar Fajardo will be a game-time decision. 

He said Fajardo, who is nursing a left ankle sprain, will only be fielded in if the situation calls for it. Though it most likely won’t happen. 

“He’s a game time decision but I doubt it,” he said. “It’s just the second game of the season.” 

He added: “As much as the fans want to see him, as much as I want to see him play, I will be cautious.”

The 6-foot-10 Fajardo who just won the Best Player of the Conference award in the previous Philippine Cup has yet to see action in the ongoing Commissioner’s Cup. He sat out the Beermen’s first game against the Meralco Bolts last Friday, March 7. San Miguel still managed to win that contest in dominating fashion, 94-76. 

The match-up between Greg Slaughter and Fajardo has long been highly anticipated, especially since their first head-to-head in the pros was already postponed last Christmas due to Fajardo’s sprained ACL. 

Fajardo and Slaughter were rivals in college in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) before Slaughter transferred to Ateneo de Manila University. 

“I know he’ll beg me to let him play,” Purves said. “But I want what’s best for him.”

Purves, however, added that  Fajardo will play in the Beermen’s next game against the Talk N’ Text Tropang Texters on Friday, March 14. – Rappler.com
